A driver was ejected from a vehicle and died Sunday morning after speeding away from police attempting to do a traffic violation stop.

Prairie Village Police did not initiate a pursuit of a silver Chevrolet Malibu which continued speeding east on 63rd Street around 1:39 a.m., according to Alayna Gonzalez, spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department.

At the intersection of 63rd Street and State Line Road, the Chevrolet crossed into Missouri across a grassy median and struck a tree on the west side of 62nd Street. The vehicle then launched across 62nd Street, hitting a large tree. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

This traffic fatality marks the 64th incident in 2024, compared to 61 at this time last year, according to Gonzalez. The investigation is ongoing.
