One dead and another critically injured in Saturday hit and run in Kansas City

Update: The deceased passenger of the Nissan has been identified as Heidi Hain, 45.

One person is dead and another critically injured from a hit and run in Kansas City Saturday.

Drivers in a Nissan Altima and white Chevrolet were experiencing mechanical problems in the westbound lanes of the Truman Road Bridge over Manchester when they were hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding westbound, according to Alayna Gonzalez, spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department.

The driver of the Chevrolet was in the passenger seat waiting for help and the Nissan driver was standing outside of the vehicle. A front-seat passenger of the Nissan was sitting in the passenger seat without a seat belt when the Jeep struck the back of the Nissan. The impact caused the Nissan to hit the Chevrolet and the driver standing outside of the Nissan, according to Gonzalez.

The front-seat passenger of the Nissan was declared dead at the scene and the pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. The passenger of the Chevrolet was uninjured, according to Gonzalez. The driver of the Jeep fled the scene on foot and was not located.

This fatality marks the 63rd traffic fatality in Kansas City this year compared to 60 at this time last year, according to police.
