Prosecutors have charged a 17-year-old Staley High School senior with possessing child pornography after school officials found illicit images on his school-issued laptop computer.
David S. Bigler of Kansas City, North, was being held in the Clay County Detention Center after failing to post $50,000 bond. Bigler was scheduled to make his first court appearance at 2 p.m. Thursday.
According to court records, other students told a teacher that Bigler was looking at pornography on his computer while in class. School officials confiscated Bigler’s laptop and cellphone before calling police Tuesday.
Investigators found about 40 images of child pornography involving girls about 5 to 10 years old. They also found about seven images of adult pornography.

Bigler told investigators that he had been downloading child pornography for about two or three weeks and adult pornography for a much longer period of time, according to court records.
North Kansas City School District officials said they make efforts to ensure the online safety of students accessing the Internet from district devices, strictly filtering for content that is deemed inappropriate.
“Regardless of the system used, students are very familiar with technology and persistent in finding ways to work around the filter,” the district said in a statement. “The district will use this situation as an opportunity to review our process and procedures, looking for areas of improvement if needed.”
