Johnson County man sentenced to over 41 years in prison in rape of child under 14 years old
A judge sentenced a 32-year-old Johnson County man to more than 41 years in prison for raping a child under the age of 14 years old, according to the district attorney’s office.
Johnson County Judge Michael P. Joyce on Thursday sentenced Cameron J. McPheeters of Olathe to 41 years and three months in prison, according to a news release from the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.
McPheeters pleaded guilty in June to two counts of rape of a child. He was initially charged in May 2021 with aggravated indecent liberties with a child, rape of a child and aggravated criminal sodomy, according to court documents. Those charges were amended in May 2022 to include a charge of sexual exploitation of a child.
Under his plea agreement, McPheeters agreed to plea guilty to two counts of rape of a child and the district attorney agreed to drop the sodomy and sexual exploitation charges.
McPheeters and prosecutors also agreed upon the sentence the judge handed out and that McPheeters would not request probation. McPheeters will be required to register as a sexual offender.
McPheeters will have 14 days to appeal the sentence. If he challenges any part of the case, including the plea and sentence, and it reduces the agreed-upon sentence, the district attorney may withdraw the plea and reinstate the original charges, according to the plea agreement.
