Man dead after a shooting Saturday night in Kansas City

A man is dead after a shooting Saturday night in Kansas City.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at around 7:30 p.m. just east of the intersection of Ninth Street and Chestnut Avenue, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were performed on the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department.

Police later identified the victim as 25-year-old Melquan T. West-Yancy.

Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide. Several witnesses were interviewed, and detectives will continue to canvass the area, Di Martino said in a news release.

The deadly shooting was the 81st homicide recorded in Kansas City in 2024, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. There were 115 homicides recorded in the city at this point last year.
