Kansas City officer shot while arresting suspected impaired driver during traffic stop
A Kansas City police officer was shot and injured while arresting a man suspected of being impaired during a traffic stop Monday night, a police spokesman said.
The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment of their injury, but the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.
The shooting occurred shortly after 10:15 p.m. Monday near East 46th Street and Benton Boulevard, along the border of Oak Park Southwest and Oak Park Southeast neighborhoods.
Officers had stopped a vehicle and were investigating whether the driver was impaired, Becchina said. Additional officers responded to the scene to assist.
While officers placed the man under arrest, the man allegedly grabbed a firearm and fired the weapon, and gunfire struck one of the officers, Becchina said.
The other officers got control of the firearm and arrested the driver. No officers fired their weapons, Becchina said.
The injured officer was taken to a hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Becchina said. The driver was not injured.
Detectives and crime scene investigators were investigating the alleged assault on the officer and gathering evidence at the scene.
