Police find 2 dead after Independence shooting that prompted lockdown of schools

One suspect is in custody after a shooting that left two people dead Friday in Independence, police said.

Officers responded to the 1300 block of North Lynn Street around 3:30 p.m. after callers reported the sound of gunfire. Police found two people with gunshot wounds at a residence. The two were declared dead at the scene.

Schools in the area were placed on lockdown while officers searched for the suspect, who was also found with a gunshot wound, police said.

After the suspect was taken into custody, police let the schools lift their lockdowns.

In a news release, Independence Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public and that they are not looking for any other suspects.

Detectives are working to determine what led to the shooting.

The shooting happened a short distance from William Chrisman High School. On Friday night, officers kept streets near Lynn Street and Nickell Avenue blocked off as crime scene investigators combed the area for evidence.
