Man is accused of ramming his vehicle into an Independence police car and swerving toward officers
Prosecutors have charged a Kansas City, Kan., man with multiple crimes after his vehicle allegedly rammed a police car and swerved toward officers attempting to slow his truck during a police pursuit.
Jesus A. Carreno-Zamora was charged Wednesday with assault and attempted assault in the Tuesday incident.
Carreno-Zamora allegedly stole a radio from another vehicle before Independence police began a pursuit Tuesday morning near Missouri 291 and Truman Road.
According to police, after Carreno-Zamora headed west on Interstate 70, he swerved toward two officers deploying spike strips. The strips deflated two of the truck’s tires, but the truck continued west, at one point ramming an Independence police car. The officer wasn’t injured.
Although Kansas City officers deflated the truck’s two other tires, it continued into the Northland before catching fire and stopping near Vivion Road and U.S. 69.
Carreno-Zamora allegedy attempted to flee before police arrested him and two passengers.
Officers checking the vehicle’s interior found a loaded weapon and illegal drugs.
Prosecutors also charged Carreno-Zamora with theft, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana.
