The driver of a Kia Rio struck and killed a pedestrian crossing a street in Independence early Friday, a police spokesman said.

The fatal crash occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. as the pedestrian was crossing East 23rd Street near South Norton Avenue, said Sgt. Jeff Buck with the Independence Police Department’s traffic safety unit.

The driver in the Kia was headed east and struck the pedestrian, who suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Buck said. The name of the pedestrian was not being released until the person could be identified and family notified.

The Kia’s driver, who was not injured, remained at the scene of the crash and was cooperating with the investigation, Buck said.

In the area of the crash, East 23rd Street is five lanes — two lanes in each direction and fifth center turn lane, according to Google Maps.
