Standoff near Johnson County high school ends with suspect in custody after gunfire
An aggravated battery suspect was arrested after a seven hour standoff with police at an apartment complex near Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park Tuesday morning, a police spokesman said.
During the standoff, an officer fired a shot at the suspect after he allegedly displayed a gun, said Officer John Lacy, a spokesman for the Overland Park Police Department said. The man was not injured.
Officers responded about 2:10 a.m. to investigate a reported aggravated battery involving roommates at an apartment in the Brownstone at Overland Park in the 6100 block of Marty Lane.
Police determined that a man and woman had gotten into a physical altercation. The woman, who was seriously injured, escaped from the apartment and called 911. She told police the man was armed, Lacy said. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Officers surrounded the apartment and at one point the suspect exited the building. When police told him to stop, he allegedly reached into his waistband and pulled out what appeared to be a firearm, Lacy said.
It was at that point that one of the officers fired a shot at the suspect. The man retreated back inside the apartment building, Lacy said.
Tactical and crisis intervention officers, as well as a negotiator and a member of the Johnson County Mental Health, responded to the area. As a precaution, police evacuated the apartments in the same building where the man had holed up.
During the standoff, police had asked people to avoid the area around the apartments. The high school, located at 7401 Johnson Drive, was not affected by the standoff and the students were in school, Lacy said.
Prior to surrendering, the man repeatedly said he was coming out, but then didn’t surrender, Lacy said. Police used tear gas in an effort to get him to come out of the apartment.
After several hours of negotiations, the suspect exited the apartment building and was arrested without further incident.
Police took the man into custody around 9:15 a.m., Lacy said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
