Pedestrian dead after driver hit them and fled the scene late Sunday in Kansas City

A pedestrian died following a hit-and-run crash late Sunday in Kansas City.

Officers responded around 11:07 p.m. to northbound 71 Highway at 18th Street, where a pedestrian had been hit while walking across the lanes, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

A tan or gold minivan hit the pedestrian and left the scene without stopping, according to police.

The incident was the 60th road fatality this year, compared to 58 at this time last year, according to data tracked by police.

Northbound lanes of the highway were closed starting at 22nd Street for about three and a half hours while police investigated.
