A rider of a moped was critically injured when the driver of a Ford Mustang rear-ended him and dragged the moped a block before fleeing from the scene, a Kansas City police spokesman said.

The crash occurred about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blue Ridge Cut-off and Sni-A-Bar Road, south of the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, said Sgt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

The rider was headed south in the right-hand lane of Blue Ridge Cut-off on a silver and purple KTMMEX moped. The driver of white Ford Mustang was traveling south in the same lane and struck the moped from behind, Becchina said.

As a result of the impact, the rider was thrown from the moped, which became lodged under the front of the Mustang. The driver, however, continued south and about a block away, turned onto west onto East 52nd Street. At that point, the moped became freed from under the Mustang.

The driver continued around the block and returned to the scene of the crash on Sni-A-Bar before fleeing north on Blue Ridge Cut-off. A witness followed the Mustang to westbound I-70. At that point, the witness stopped and returned to the scene, Becchina said.

The driver of the Mustang left the car near East 42nd Street and Pittman Road and eventually returned to the scene with family.

Any charges would be determined after completion of the investigation into the crash and the results reviewed by prosecutors, Becchina said.
