Where is the Klymax Lounge? What to know about site of Kansas City nightclub shooting
A poster bearing a pair of pink lips adorns the green exterior of the Klymax Lounge, a restaurant and nightclub in the Oak Park neighborhood on Kansas City’s East Side.
Located at the corner of Indiana Avenue and E. 43rd Street at 4242 Indiana Ave., the nightclub was the site of a deadly shooting Saturday night that left three dead and two more injured. The intersection is home to several small businesses, but the surrounding neighborhood is residential.
The club’s social media accounts boast a variety of recurring events including karaoke, open mic nights, DJ sets and live music performances. It has also hosted one-time events like a brunch performance, a Super Bowl watch party and a lingerie fashion show.
Since it first opened in July 2021, Klymax Lounge has hosted events featuring local up and coming artists and performers, according to its Instagram. In its first summer, the city cited the club for a liquor code violation that was resolved shortly after, and no other code violations are listed under the address in city records after the club opened.
On the night of the shooting, the Klymax Lounge hosted a group of local artists including performers Lefty T-Rone and KC Brat, DJ Yung Reno Huss and rapper Nutty Still Gassin’, according to its Facebook page.
The Klymax Lounge posted regularly about its security measures on social media, noting that security is present both inside and outside of the club. A digital event flier for the night before the shooting included the line “Security Strictly Enforced.”
One security guard, 41-year-old Jason McConnell, was among the people killed Saturday, family members told The Star. Police confirmed the victims’ identities Monday. In addition to McConnell, 24-year-old Antoinette “Libby” Brenson and 33-year-old Clarence Henderson, who The Star independently confirmed is a rapper who goes by the name Nutty Still Gassin’ and performed at the club that night, also died.
Two other people were also shot, but lived. Both victims remain critically wounded, but in stable condition at the hospital, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
Residents created a small memorial of flowers and sidewalk chalk outside the club following the shooting. As of Monday morning, the flowers are still there.
The Star’s Andrea Klick and Anna Spoere contributed reporting.
