Two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries on Friday night after a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 71 in Kansas City, according to police.

Officers were dispatched around 7:50 p.m. to East 53rd Street and the northbound side of the divided highway for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

Police said the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee was headed south against traffic flow. Near the intersection of the crash, the driver of a Nissan tried to avoid colliding with the Jeep by swerving toward the shoulder, striking the guardrail.

The vehicles still collided head-on, police said.

After the crash, police said the wrong-way driver jumped out of the Jeep and ran off, but was apprehended by officers who pursued him on foot.

Both were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Police said neither driver was wearing a seat belt.
