Three people were seriously injured, including one who remained in critical condition, in a two-vehicle Kansas City crash Wednesday afternoon that ended with one catching fire, according to police.

Officers were dispatched around 2 p.m. to the busy intersection of Linwood Boulevard and Prospect Avenue on the reported injury crash, police said.

Police investigators determined that the driver of a gray Chevy sedan traveling at high speed then blew a red light. The sedan struck an SUV that was northbound on Prospect, police said.

A passenger was thrown from the sedan, police said, as the vehicle overturned and then caught fire. The passenger and driver were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and the driver remained in critical condition.

Police said the SUV’s driver also suffered serious injuries but was in stable condition.

The crash remained under investigation Wednesday night.
