Pedestrian struck by pickup truck in Kansas City, driver impairment suspected: Police

A pedestrian crossing a Kansas City street in a wheelchair was struck by a pickup truck whose driver is suspected of impairment, according to police.

The pedestrian was taken by ambulance to the hospital with critical injuries, according to police. After the crash, police said the driver pulled into a nearby gas station and was taken into custody.

The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. at East 23rd Street and Television Place on the eastern edge of the city. Police said the driver was headed west on 23rd, turned left onto Television into the wrong lanes of traffic and hit the pedestrian as he was on the north side of the intersection.

The impact threw the pedestrian from his wheelchair and into the air, according to police.
