Two people were seriously injured in a crash Friday afternoon that Kansas City police say happened after the driver fled a car stop and blew a red light.

Both were in a white Chevy Camaro that was headed south at high speed on Prospect Avenue while a Honda SUV was headed west on 51st Street, according to police. Before the crash, a police spokesman said the Camaro was the subject of a traffic stop.

Police say neither the driver nor the passenger of the Camaro was wearing a seat belt. The driver was critically injured, and impairment was being investigated, police said. The passenger had serious injuries not considered life-threatening.

The driver of the Honda also was taken to the hospital. Police said she was wearing a seat belt and had injuries that were not-life-threatening.

Capt. Corey Carlisle, a KCPD spokesman, said in an email that police officers were not chasing the driver of the Camaro when the crash happened.
