Update: Police identified the victim as 63-year-old Gayla Ann Freeman.

A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle Monday afternoon while crossing the street in the Riverview neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, according to police.

The crash happened around 3:10 p.m. at 10th Street and Central Avenue, Nancy Chartrand, a KCKPD spokeswoman, said in a news release.

The pedestrian was attempting to cross at a traffic signal when she was struck by a vehicle, Chartrand said. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The vehicle initially left the area, Chartrand said, but as of Monday night the driver had made contact with officers and was cooperating with the police investigation.

Further details were not disclosed by police Monday night.

KCKPD’s Traffic Division was handling the investigation. Police were asking any witnesses or anyone with information concerning the crash to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
