One person is dead after an SUV being pursued by police crashed into another vehicle early Sunday in Kansas City, police said.

As Kansas City, Kansas officers pursued a white GMC Terrain taken in connection with an armed robbery, the chase crossed over into Kansas City, Missouri, according to Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department.

The GMC was traveling at a high speed when around 2:07 a.m. it failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Independence and Hardesty avenues and struck a Nissan Altima traveling northbound on Hardesty, Becchina said.

A front seat passenger in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Nissan was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the GMC was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

In a statement Sunday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department said the vehicle they were pursuing had been stolen during an aggravated armed robbery in the 400 block of North 18th Street. The press release did not include any other information that had not previously been released by KCPD.

No Kansas City, Missouri police officers were involved in the pursuit. No other information was immediately available.

This is the second road fatality this year in Kansas City, compared with five deaths at this time last year, according to data tracked by police.
