Impairment suspected in Thanksgiving Day crash that critically injured driver in KC

Police suspect impairment was a factor in a Thanksgiving Day wreck that critically injured the driver of a pickup truck on Kansas City’s east side, a police spokesman said.

Accident investigators responded to the crash about 5:15 p.m. on the ramp from 63rd Street to Interstate 435, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Their investigation revealed that the driver of a tan Toyota Tacoma pickup had turned from westbound 63rd Street onto the entrance ramp to southbound I-435. The driver was traveling at a high speed and the pickup truck lost its grip on the ramp, Becchina said.

The pickup veered off the left side of the ramp and struck the highway’s embankment. The driver, who was the only person in the pickup, suffered critical injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The investigation into the crash continues.
