Man taken into custody, baby safe following hours-long standoff in Independence
Independence police said a man was taken into custody Wednesday following an hours-long standoff at a residence.
At 10:50 a.m., about an hour after police concluded the standoff, the man was arrested during a vehicle stop at U.S. 24 Highway and Mayes Road, the Independence Police Department posted on Facebook. The baby who was locked inside with the man was also found safe.
Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to a domestic violence call at the residence in the 1000 block of North Aztec Court, where they learned that a man who may have had a weapon was inside with a baby, said Independence Police Department spokesman Jack Taylor.
Police barricaded the home with the man and baby inside, and negotiators at the scene tried to convince the man to leave or hand over the baby.
A woman had previously left the home.
Parts of Aztec Drive and Jackson Drive were closed around the home, but the roads and neighborhood were reopened around 10 a.m. when police backed down from the barricade to avoid making “the situation un-necessarily worse and keeping the safety of the involved parties and citizens in mind,” the department said on Facebook.
