August death of Kansas City boy is ruled a homicide

The Jackson County medical examiner has ruled the August death of an 8-year-old Kansas City boy a homicide.

The boy, Tyler Lane, died at a hospital after suffering a severe asthma attack. Medical neglect was ruled to be a contributing factor.

According to police, officers were called to Children’s Mercy Hospital on Aug. 15 after Tyler had been admitted the previous day.

A social worker told police that the boy had been sent home from school a few days earlier because of asthma attacks and that he would not be allowed to return to school until he had medication for asthma, according to a police report.

On Aug. 14, he suffered another attack and was hospitalized with reported brain hemorrhaging, according to police reports. At that time, he was listed as “possibly” brain dead “due to the lack of medical treatment he received.”

He died on Aug. 22, according to his obituary.

Police said that no charges have been filed, but detectives are continuing to investigate.
