Sheriff’s office investigates after student brings unloaded gun to Independence school
Law enforcement is investigating after a student brought a gun to an Independence middle school Tuesday.
District officials are working within board policy to discipline the student, who brought an unloaded firearm to Osage Trail Middle School, said Stephanie Smith, a spokeswoman with the Fort Osage School District. The district is also working with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office on charges, she said.
In an email to parents Tuesday, principal Robbie Shepherd said he worked with school administrators and the school resource officer to investigate the situation after receiving a report that a student brought a gun to school.
“I am proud of those who reported this information so that I could respond in a very timely manner,” he said. “As a school community, we need to continue to emphasize with our students the importance of reporting when the students see or hear something that directly impacts the safety for all.”
The sheriff’s department is investigating the incident and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
