A hit-and-run crash involving three vehicles Sunday night left one person dead in south Kansas City, police said.

The driver of a white Winnebago Minnie was headed north on U.S. 71 highway about 8:15 p.m. Sunday when the pull-behind travel trailer began having engine problems and stalled out near 85th Street, according to a news release from the Kansas City Police Department.

At the time, a friend of the Winnebago driver was driving a white Dodge Ram 1500 conversion van behind the Winnebago as they headed to one of their homes. When the Winnebago pulled over in the third lane, the driver of the van did too, police said.

This driver, a woman, put on her emergency flashers as the driver of the Winnebago got into the van and they called for assistance.

While they waiting for help to arrive, the driver of a white Chevy Silverado truck rear-ended the Dodge, sending the front of the van into the back of the Winnebago, police said.

Upon impact, the driver of the van was killed, officials said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The Winnebago’s driver was not injured.

The driver of the truck ran away, police said.

The crash, which closed down all lanes of U.S. 71 for more than three hours Sunday night, remains under investigation.

This is the 68th fatal crash this year, according to the police department.
