Kansas City police develop person of interest in fatal pedestrian hit-and-run on I-435
Kansas City detectives investigating the case of a fatal hit-and-run crash on Interstate 435 over the Labor Day weekend identified a person of interest and were preparing to present findings to Jackson County prosecutors, a police spokeswoman said Friday.
Officer Donna Drake said in a brief statement on Friday that the detectives were working toward completing the investigation of the fatal crash, which left 56-year-old David C. Barton dead along the roadside. On Sunday the department issued a plea to the public for tips to help solve the case as several details remained unclear to investigators.
Police have said Barton’s body was discovered shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday in a grassy median along I-435 near Oldham Road. Crash scene investigators determined a northbound vehicle had struck Barton in one of the traffic lanes, throwing him off to the side of the road.
The exact location of the crash and the time it occurred were not immediately clear to police. Barton was only found after a passing motorist called police to report the body.
Under Missouri law, leaving the scene of a deadly crash is a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 7 years in prison.
