Excelsior Springs homicide suspect surrenders to authorities in northwestern Texas

A man sought by police in connection with a double shooting that left one person dead in Excelsior Springs early Wednesday has surrendered in northwestern Texas, authorities said.

Excelsior Springs police were searching for the man, identified as Keith Bass, after they found two gunshot victims around 12:15 a.m. on a porch near the intersection of North Main Street and Grand Avenue. Both gunshot victims were found lying on a porch, said Excelsior Springs Police Department Chief Gregory Dull in a news release.

The victims, a man and a woman, were taken to the hospital. The woman was pronounced dead shortly after arriving there, and the man remained in critical condition Wednesday.

Earlier Wednesday, Dull said the crime did not appear to be random and that a person of interest was actively being sought. Dull later said the suspect, Bass, was the estranged husband to the homicide victim, Theresa Bass.

Dull said Keith Bass turned himself over to police in Floyd County, Texas, roughly 640 miles southwest of Kansas City. The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday that Bass had been booked into the jail there at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
