Man gets life sentence in murder of Shawnee liquor store owner
A man convicted in the 2010 killing of a Shawnee liquor store owner was sentenced Friday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
Bruce Ashley Jr. was sentenced in Johnson County District Court, where a jury in August found him guilty of first-degree murder for the May 2010 shooting death of Gerry Grovenburg.
Ashley, 31, also was sentenced Friday to 43 additional months for attempted aggravated robbery.
Grovenburg, 61, owned Mr. G’s Liquor Store at 76th Street and Quivira Road for 35 years.
A co-defendant, who testified against Ashley at the trial, previously pleaded guilty to aiding a felon and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. Larry Marshall Jr., who is Ashley’s cousin, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the crime.
