Man killed in Northland by Kansas City police is identified

A man fatally shot by Kansas City police late Wednesday in the Northland was identified Friday as Ymauo Erwin.

Erwin, 41, of Kansas City, North, reportedly was involved in a domestic disturbance when police were called to the 4200 block of Northwest 57th Terrace just before midnight Wednesday.

Police said he was brandishing a swordlike item when an officer shot him.

The officer was placed on leave and the incident is under investigation.

Erwin was an immigrant from the Federated States of Micronesia who had lived in the Kansas City area about three years, according to the pastor of the church he attended. He worked for National Car Rental at Kansas City International Airport.
