Two dead, one critically injured in Lee’s Summit shooting: police
Police in Lee’s Summit were investigating after two people were killed and a third was hospitalized with critical injuries stemming from a shooting inside a residence Thursday afternoon.
Police were called just before 3 p.m. to the 1200 block of NE Oakwood Drive on a reported shooting, Officer Ronnie Doumitt, a police spokesman, said at the scene. Officers entered a house and found three adult gunshot victims.
Two were pronounced dead at the scene. The third was taken to the hospital by the Lee’s Summit Fire Department with injuries described by police as life-threatening.
Circumstances surrounding the shooting were not fully known Thursday. But Doumitt said investigators believe all involved, including the shooter, were accounted for.
“We believe we have everyone that was involved,” Doumitt said, adding: “We have nothing outstanding (and) we’re not looking for any suspects at this time.”
“Our hearts go out to the family. Our hearts go out to the neighborhood … It’s a very difficult time right now for everyone,” he said.
Police say all three people shot knew each other, though they have yet to disclose their relationships to one another. Detectives and crime scene investigators were still working to determine what led up to the shooting and who the shooter was.
The identities of the victims were being withheld by police until family members were notified.
Officers remained on the scene into Thursday evening as a large yellow house in the quiet residential neighborhood was blocked off by patrol vehicles and crime scene tape. Around 6 p.m., investigators entered the home and the backyard after obtaining a warrant to search the property from a Jackson County judge.
The police presence was unusual for the quiet neighborhood, said Jeff Wagner, who lives across the street and a few doors down. Over the 30 years he has lived there, Wagner said, he rarely sees police on his street aside from vehicles out on patrol.
Wagner said he was at home and happened to come outside as police cars and what appeared to be a SWAT team came to the block.
“Next thing you know they’re blocking off the street, blocking off everything else and running around the house,” Wagner said.
Wagner said the residents of the home are a couple with two grown children. He described them as nice, quiet and reserved.
“Very sad for this to happen,” Wagner said, adding: “I feel sorry for the family. My heart goes out to the whole family.”
