Kansas City man accused of kidnapping woman from Ward Parkway home, raping her at gunpoint

A Kansas City man is accused of kidnapping a stranger from her Ward Parkway neighborhood home before forcing her to get money from the bank and then raping her at gunpoint.

Sean Quinn Jr., 19, was charged Sunday in Jackson County Circuit Court with sodomy, robbery, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, stealing a motor vehicle and three counts of armed criminal action. He was arrested the day of the alleged assault and is being held in the Jackson County jail.

Charging documents say a Kansas City police officer was working off duty near the intersection of 73rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue when he was flagged down by a man and woman. The woman proceeded to tell the officer that she had been robbed, kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a man who had walked into her house uninvited.

The woman said she was watching TV when, from the corner of her eye, she saw a man standing in her living room, a Kansas City detective wrote in the charging document. As she started to scream, she said, the man allegedly put his hand over her mouth and told her to stop or he would kill her.

The man wanted money, the woman told police, and when he discovered she only had $12 in the house he said they were going to the bank. She said he kept a gun trained on her as she drove them to an ATM in Prairie Village, where she withdrew $1,000 in cash.

As they were driving back toward her home, the woman told police, she said the man started making sexual advances. She refused, she said, but after they pulled up to a parking spot in front of her house he allegedly raped her at gunpoint.

After telling the man she needed to use the bathroom, she said, she was allowed to exit the vehicle and then ran to a neighbor for help. The suspect then fled the area with her car, bank cards and keys.

The car was spotted that evening by police, roughly an hour after the report was made, near 67th Street and Swope Parkway. The driver fled an attempted traffic stop at high speed and was later seen by street cameras near 31st Street and Prospect Ave.

Officers found the car in a nearby commercial parking lot. Quinn was spotted by police in a clothing store, where he was allegedly seen “frantically looking around” and pacing in front of a dressing room. He was arrested and taken to police headquarters.

Surveillance video from the store allegedly showed Quinn getting out of the woman’s car. He also matched the physical description the woman gave, including the clothing he wore and the diamond-studded grill that covered his top row of teeth.

Police allegedly found Quinn in possession of the car keys, nearly $1,000 in cash and a loaded handgun. He allegedly gave a fake name and date of birth when he was arrested.

During an interview with police, Quinn denied committing any of the crimes. He allegedly told police he knew the vehicle was stolen and took it from 59th Street and Indiana Avenue around 5 p.m. that evening.

Detectives showed a photo lineup of suspects to the woman as she was being evaluated at the hospital for sexual assault. She identified Quinn as the suspect, and gave police home surveillance footage that allegedly showed Quinn arrive at her house and kidnap her.

An attorney for Quinn was not listed in court records as of Thursday.
