Mother of woman shot to death in Raytown last year asks the community for help
The mother of a woman who was fatally shot in Raytown late last year is asking for help following a struggle with her insurance company.
Jonice Burks was found dead at about 11:10 p.m. on Nov. 30. She was 23 years old.
A spokesman with the Raytown Police Department said Burks was in a parked vehicle near 74th Street and Raytown Road suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Police at the time said a man was taken into custody at the scene, but that he was later released.
She was the sixth homicide victim in Raytown in 2021.
An online fundraiser, organized by Burks’ mother, was created this month after ongoing insurance struggles, according to the fundraising post.
“I’m currently battling the life insurance policies that I had active with my daughter. The insurance company is now trying to back out,” Burks’ mother wrote on GoFundMe. “But now the funeral services are demanding payment and in a perfect world I’d have the payment available to give to them but I don’t. The insurance company has failed me and I’m in the [midst] of appealing.”
She is asking for any financial help. As of Sunday, the fundraiser garnered about $2,000 of its $27,500 goal.
“May My Baby rest well,” Burks’ mother wrote.
