Independence police have determined that a part of an explosive device found outside Tuesday was not a threat to the public.

Just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Independence police posted on social media that they were investigating the possibility of an explosive device found near Sterling Avenue and Truman Road. A number of businesses sit near the intersection, including a gas station, supermarket and car lot.

During the investigation, all foot and vehicle traffic was shut down in the area while the department’s bomb squad responded.

About an hour later, police announced that the the device, found to be the hull of a Mark II grenade, lacked a firing mechanism. The street was reopened by about 7:30 p.m.
