Kansas City man shot in hand by police officer after reported armed disturbance

A 28-year-old man was hospitalized after a Kansas City police officer shot him in the hand Monday night following a situation described by authorities as an armed disturbance near Troost Lake.

Officers were dispatched to the area of East 29th Street and The Paseo around 6 p.m. after area visitors reported being threatened by a man with a gun, Sgt. Bill Lowe, a Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman, said at the scene.

As officers arrived, the man allegedly continued to threaten several people there. He refused commands by police to drop the weapon, Lowe said, and one officer fired the single shot that struck him in the hand.

No officers were injured during the encounter. The man, identified as a Kansas City resident, was recovering in a hospital Monday night, where he was in police custody.

Investigators were still interviewing witnesses to piece together the events that led up to the shooting. But Lowe said the threats appeared to have been made to people visiting the lake at random, and the man with the gun looked to be “having a crisis of some sort.”

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is leading the shooting investigation. The agency has done so for all Kansas City Police Department shootings since 2020.
