‘Non-functional’ gun found on 15-year-old at Bonner Springs High School: police
A 15-year-old student at Bonner Springs High School was taken into police custody Wednesday afternoon after investigators determined that he brought a “non-functional” handgun to school, police said.
The Bonner Springs Police Department said in a statement that a school resource officer for the high school was alerted by school officials of a possible firearm on school grounds around 2 p.m. The assigned resource officer was met by other responding police and school staff, and the student was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Investigators found that the 15-year-old, whose identity was not disclosed by police, had brought the gun to school after reports were made that the firearm was being shown to other students. Police found that the gun was not functional after it was confiscated.
Police said no threats were made by the 15-year-old.
Bonner Springs officers continued to investigate the matter on Wednesday afternoon. In the statement, police said no additional information would be immediately shared concerning the investigation.
