Correction: Police initially said Wednesday that they were investigating a homicide, but then said they had received conflicting information from a hospital and the man was on life support.
Update: Police said Thursday that the man had died. He was identified as 35-year-old Che Jefferson.
Kansas City police are investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition and on life support.
Police were called to the scene at a home in the 3500 block of South Benton Avenue just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after someone reported hearing shots fired, said Officer Donna Drake, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department.
While officers were on their way the scene, 911 operators also received a call reporting an accident with an injury two blocks from the shooting scene.
When police arrived at the scene, they were told that several people had gotten into an argument which ended when someone fired shots, striking a man in his 40s, Drake said.
The victim, who was suffering from gunshot wounds, then left the home in a car and started driving south until he crashed into a pole and a handful of parked cars in the 3600 block of South Benton, police said.
The victim, who was found in the vehicle, was treated by EMS and taken to a hospital with injuries that were life-threatening.
At the hospital, the victim was initially reported to have died, but hospital staff later told police he remained alive on life support and in critical condition, Drake said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the department’s homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
