A 2-year-old who was handling a gun died after it discharged at a home in the 500 block of South Glenwood Avenue in Independence, police said Friday.

Earlier that afternoon, it was initially reported that the child was struck by a bullet from a drive-by shooting. Investigators later determined that was not the case, Independence police said in a statement Friday night.

When police arrived after the shooting near East Wilson Road, an adult at the home fled the scene. Investigators have identified a person of interest and were working to take this person into custody Friday.

After fleeing the home, the person was driving a vehicle that was then involved in a crash at Truman and Noland roads. The person drove away from the scene, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
