Danny Carey of rock band Tool arrested at Kansas City International Airport

Danny Carey, the drummer from the acclaimed rock group Tool, was arrested Sunday at Kansas City International Airport after being accused of verbally and physically assaulting another man there.

Carey, 60, was issued a citation in Kansas City Municipal Court that alleges the drummer yelled a gay slur and another expletive repeatedly and jabbed two of his fingers into a person’s chest. He is accused of making unlawful and offensive contact.

The municipal violation Carey is accused of carries a maximum punishment of 180 days in jail or a fine between $250 and $1,000 — or a combination of a fine plus jail.

News of the arrest spread widely in the entertainment media world Monday, including a report from TMZ showing Carey’s arrest on video. The video shows him being pressed up against the glass of a KCI terminal by police officers as his hands are held behind his back and he is instructed to stop resisting.

The drummer grew up in Paola, Kansas. He visited Lawrence over the weekend to perform at the University of Kansas during a matchup Saturday night between the Jayhawks and the University of Missouri Tigers basketball teams. Carey took the spotlight on his drum kit with a rendition of “Fire” by Jimi Hendrix during the halftime show.

Carey is one of the founding members of Tool, a progressive metal band that has won three Grammy Awards since 1997. In 2016, Rolling Stone put him in 26th place for its list of the 100 greatest drummers of all time. Carey resides in Malibu, California.
