Man sentenced to 15 years in prison on gun, drug charges after KC police chase
A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for gun and drug possession charges that came after he took police on a high-speed chase through Kansas City in the spring of 2020.
Michael Allen Dicks, Jr. was issued the sentence Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips in the Western District of Missouri. He pleaded guilty to two felonies in July for possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell and possession of a firearm to further drug trafficking.
In March 2020, a Platte County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a gray Nissan Altima that had blown a red light near the intersection of Northwest Cookingham Drive and North Ambassador Drive, a short distance from Kansas City International Airport. The deputy chased the car, which reached speeds of 130 mph and went the wrong direction on the highway, until the car crashed roughly six miles away.
Dicks was taken to a hospital for treatment after the crash. Inside his car, police discovered a 9mm pistol and a bag containing nearly 500 grams of meth, according to court records.
During an interview with investigators at the hospital, Dicks eventually admitted to being in possession of the gun and told them he had purchased it for roughly $100 two weeks earlier. He told them he had picked up a kilo of meth within the past month, which he sold for $6,500, court records said.
