Kansas City police are investigating a threatening message posted on social media involving an area middle school.

Smith-Hale Middle School families received a message from school administrators on Monday evening regarding the possible threat.

“This evening a student allegedly posted a threatening message on Snapchat directed towards Smith-Hale,” administrators wrote.

They did not elaborate on the nature of the threat.

The school notified the Kansas City Police Department of the potential threat, which the department is now investigating, school officials said.

Additional security and safety measures were in place at the middle school Tuesday, a district spokeswoman said. The district declined to elaborate on what the additional measures entailed.

Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the police department, said the off-duty officers that work in the school were “contacted and advised of the pertinent information.”

The south patrol division command staff and duty personnel are aware of the threat, Becchina said.

He said the department’s assualt squad is handling the investigation.

School officials in their message thanked the students, parents and community members who reported the threat.
