‘Popeye’ sentenced for meth sales in Overland Park

A Kansas federal judge sentenced a man from Belize, nicknamed Popeye, to nine years in prison Monday for selling methamphetamine in Overland Park.

John Michael Hernandez, 41, pleaded guilty earlier to distributing meth and illegally re-entering the U.S. after he was convicted of robbery in California and then deported to Belize in 2009.

Hernandez admitted that he used the nickname in December 2013 when he began a series of drug sales to undercover investigators that totaled more than a pound of meth.
