Man gets prison after dropping gun in KC school auditorium

A man who dropped a loaded handgun inside a Kansas City school last year was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to court documents filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Larry K. Wren was attending a concert at University Academy when he accidentally dropped the handgun on the auditorium floor. Another concert-goer saw him pick the weapon up, and a short time later a woman with Wren was seen leaving the school carrying a diaper bag and purse.

After Kansas City police arrived, they located a 9mm handgun with 15 rounds in its magazine in a purse inside a car in the parking lot of the school at 6801 Holmes Road.

Wren, 42, admitted to police that he had forgotten he had the gun with him and accidentally dropped it inside the school. He said he had the woman take the gun outside because he was afraid he would get in trouble.

According to court records, Wren, of Kansas City, has two prior felony convictions and cannot legally possess a firearm.
