Lawrence man arrested after standoff with police
A Lawrence man involved in a six-hour standoff with police has surrendered and is now in police custody.
The man, who has not been identified, is a suspect in an aggravated assault that occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday at a duplex in the 2400 block of Ousdahl Road in Lawrence. Police said the suspect threatened another man in the house with a rifle. The victim escaped uninjured.
When police arrived on the scene, they attempted to communicate with the suspect via text messages and a loud speaker system, said public affairs officer Trent McKinley. When the suspect refused to exit the house, police evacuated residents of neighboring homes and secured the perimeter.
The suspect surrendered peacefully at around 11:40 a.m. and is now in police custody.
