Driver blows stop sign in east KC, killing 1 and injuring others, including baby

One person was killed and others, including a baby, were injured Monday night in Kansas City when a Jeep blew a stop sign and struck a car, causing it to then hit an SUV, police said.

Officers responded to the fatal collision about 7:22 p.m. in the area of East 23rd Street and Lister Avenue, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

Police determined a green Jeep, which was reported stolen out of Overland Park, failed to stop at a stop sign while southbound on Lister Avenue. It entered the intersection and hit an eastbound Chevrolet Impala, which then struck a GMC Acadia.

The Jeep then hit two parked vehicles. The driver immediately fled the crash site, police said.

Emergency personnel pronounced the passenger of the Impala dead at the scene, while the driver was in critical condition. A third passenger, the baby, was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital with injuries that did not appear life-threatening, police said.

Those in the Acadia also suffered injuries.

A passenger in the stolen Jeep was taken into custody for questioning, according to police.

The crash marked the 68th fatal collision this year in Kansas City.
