Police working to identify victim, suspects in Independence Avenue shooting

Kansas City police are working to identify suspects and a victim after a man was fatally shot Saturday near the intersection of Cleveland and Independence avenues, police said.

Officers responded to a call around 5:45 p.m. at an apartment building on the 3500 block of Independence Avenue, police spokesperson Sgt. Jacob Becchina said.

Witnesses told police they heard gunshots and saw a victim outside the apartment building, police said. When they arrived, officers found an unconscious man on the porch of the apartment complex, Becchina said.

EMS declared the victim dead at the scene after police rendered aid, he said.. Detectives are trying to talk with witnesses to identify any suspects and the victim.

Police encouraged anyone with information on the situation to contact detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or call the anonymous TIPS hotline.

“Obviously there are a lot of people out and about,” Becchina said. “This is a very busy street this time of night, even on a Saturday. There’s a lot of foot traffic, a lot of vehicle traffic, so we’re very hopeful that somebody may have seen something that will lead detectives to who is responsible for this.”
