Pleasant Hill man pleads guilty to 2017 killing at Independence Quick Trip

A Pleasant Hill man was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty in the 2017 shooting death of a man found inside of a car in the parking lot of an Independence QuikTrip.

Michael T. Dumas was initially charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the killing of Phillip J. Anderson. However, the criminal charge was reduced to manslaughter and armed criminal action.

In January, Dumas was sentenced to 34 years in prison for killing a woman who was a witness in the shooting death of Anderson. Circuit Court Judge Michael Roldan ordered 15 years in prison for each charge. One of the sentences will be served concurrently with Dumas’s other charges.

“This was a good outcome for Michael as it only adds an additional five years to his prior sentence before he is eligible for parole,” said his defense attorney John Picerno.

According to court records, witnesses told Independence police they saw shots being fired from a black vehicle at a silver vehicle.

Witnesses also told police the victim and Dumas had exchanged words at a nearby gas station before the incident.

Dumas’ vehicle was found abandoned near Truman Sports Complex.
