Three killed, two injured in overnight shootings across the Kansas City metro area
Three people were killed and two were injured in shootings across the Kansas City metropolitan area overnight, police said Sunday.
One of the shootings left one man dead and two injured in Kansas City. In Kansas City, Kansas, two men were killed in separate shootings.
The violence comes after a bloody week in Kansas City that saw three homicides on Wednesday and two police shootings Thursday, pushing Kansas City past the benchmark of 100 homicides earlier in the year than ever before. Kansas City, Kansas, has recorded 25 homicides this year.
The first shooting Saturday night came about 11:45 p.m. at 69th Street and Prospect Avenue, Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email. Police responding to the shooting call found a man unresponsive on the sidewalk near Prospect Avenue and Gregory Boulevard.
Emergency medical personnel summoned to the scene pronounced the man dead.
Later, at a hospital, police found two men in car who had been shot. Police said they think the men were injured in the same shooting.
The victim was later identified by police as 37-year-old Charles Hampton.
Across the state line in Kansas City, Kansas, police were called to a shooting about 2:23 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Ridge Avenue, where officers found a man dead from a gunshot wound. Police later identified the victim as Edwin R. Pinto, 27, of Kansas City, Kansas.
About 4:31 a.m., police were called to another shooting: this one in the 3000 block of W. 40th Terrace. There, police found a man dead from a gunshot wound, Officer Jonathon Westbrook, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, said in a news release. The victim was later identified as Dennis K. Barnett, 35, also of Kansas City, Kansas.
Police asked anyone with information to call anonymously to the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477. Information leading to an arrest can result in a reward up to $25,000.
