Missouri Highway Patrol investigates police shooting in Independence

The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating an overnight shooting involving Independence police, who shot a suspected carjacker after allegedly being fired upon, according to the highway patrol.

Independence police responded shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday to the Cimarron Apartments near Truman Road and Blue Ridge Boulevard on a verbal domestic dispute, the highway patrol said on Twitter.

While officers investigated the dispute, a separate armed carjacking occurred. Two suspects exited a vehicle and allegedly fired toward officers, according to the highway patrol.

Officers returned fire, wounding one of the suspects. The wounded suspect was taken to a hospital while the other suspect was taken into custody.

No officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The Independence Police Department requested the highway patrol investigate the shooting.
