Protesters outside Kansas City police headquarters demand to be let into meeting

A small group of protesters gathered outside Kansas City police headquarters downtown demanding to be let into the police board of commissioners’ meeting Tuesday morning.

The meeting was closed to the public but was streamed on the city’s YouTube page. None of the 268 public comments submitted were read to the commissioners or discussed.

The group of around a dozen protesters also called for KCPD Chief Rick Smith to retire.

Community organizer Justice Horn said they want their voices to be heard.

“It’s clear that Kansas City stands behind us,” he said. “We’re not letting up.”

Horn helped organize several of the recent protests in Kansas City against police brutality sparked by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Protesters chanted “Chief Rick Smith has got to go” and “Black Lives Matter.”
