Man fatally shot by police after chase ends in Lawrence with gunfire exchange

A man was shot and killed in Lawrence by police after a chase Monday afternoon.

The incident began shortly after 3 p.m. near Lake Perry in northeast Kansas. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, troopers and the U.S. Marshal’s service were searching for a suspect. As he was located, a pursuit was initiated.

A trooper intervened with the vehicle, which became disabled.

The chase ended near 19th and Massachusetts streets in Lawrence.

After the man exited the vehicle, he exchanged gunfire with troopers and an officer from a local agency, KHP said.

He died at the scene.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the shooting.

Last weekend, there were two fatal police shootings. On Saturday, a Kansas City police officer fatally shot a carjacking suspect. On Sunday, deputies shot and killed a woman in Sedalia.

Police use-of-force has been under scrutiny following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. An officer knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. The incident sparked global protests with demonstrators calling for an end to police brutality.

According to The Washington Post, more than 1,000 people in the U.S. have been shot and killed by police in the past year.
