Officer stabbed Wednesday near 9th and Grand in downtown Kansas City, police say

A Kansas City police officer was stabbed Wednesday evening while responding to a medical call in downtown Kansas City, according to police.

The incident was reported about 5:50 p.m. in the area of Ninth Street and Grand Boulevard, according to Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a Kansas City Police Department spokesman.

The officer arrived at the scene and found a male, who was in a “very agitated state,” Becchina said. The officer believed the person was possibly experiencing a mental health crisis and tried to talk to him to help calm him down.

At some point, the suspect pulled a knife out of his pocket and stabbed the officer in the chest, Becchina said.

The officer held the male at gunpoint as more police officers arrived, taking him into custody.

The officer, who was initially said to be in critical condition, was taken to a hospital. The officer was reported to be in stable condition Wednesday evening.
